+ <h1>Developer's HOWTO:<br />making Your own GUI for mDictionary</h1>

+<p><b>mDictionary</b> is intended to be as modifiable as possible. So apart from developing Your own dictionary engines, You can also create alternative user interface, should You find ours inattractive. For the intrepid ones, I have described how to do that. In this howto, I am going to explain how to communicate GUI with the engines's manager</p>
+
+<p>The only header file You need to include in Your GUI is <span class="code">ws_dbus.h</span>. It contains all the functions necessary to communicate with the engines manager. The header file is available from our svn repository at <a href="https://garage.maemo.org">https://garage.maemo.org</a>.</p>
+<p>Firstly, You initialize our dbus wrapper library with <span class="code">ws_dbus_create</span> function. You have to specify the name and the version of Your app and store the function's return value as it is necessary for further dbus wrapper communication.</p>
+

Depending on the type, You should read the value by accessing a proper field. Here is an example:

It is strongly required if you want mDictionary to work properly. If you want to use <b>StarDict</b>, download a package with a dictionary, unpack all files and copy them into <u>the catalogue with the name of the dicionary</u>. There is also possibility to point a location of a dictionary, which is packed into <b>.tar.bz2 archive</b>. mDictionary will simply unpack it for you. <br>When you have a catalogue with a file(s) inside, open mDictionary and simply load a new dicionary file by using <i>Load Dictionary</i> from <i>Dictionaries</i> submenu.<br></p>

Point the location of the file with dicionary. If you are loading XDXF dictionary - choose a file with .xdxf extension. If you want to load StarDict - you can choose any file from a catalouge (.idx, .ifo, .idx.gz, .dict or .dict.gz extension). You can also choose .tar.bz2 file. <br />After you choose a correct file, there is a necessary to answer some question before start using dictionary. mDictionary will ask you if you want to start using a new dicionary from now and if you want to optimize a dictionary file (so that it should work faster).</p>

+ <strong>mDictionary</strong> consists of three modules:

+ mdictionary - core application<br />
+ mdictionarygui - the graphical user interface<br />
+ mdictionaryplugins - engines<br />

+ All of them are placed in one binary package - mDictionary.

+ Nokia N770 & N800 & N810 installation
+ </h1>

+ mDictionary installation steps for OS2008
+ </h2>
+ <p>
+ Mdictionary requires libbz2 library to be able to work. To install libbz library repository with libbz package should be added to application catalogue and „Red pill mode” should be activated.
+ To add the repository with libbz2 package you can click on <a href="files/chinook.install">INSTALL</a> or perform following steps to add repository manually:
+ <ol style="margin-left: 25px; margin-top: -5px margin-bottom: 5px;">
+ <li>Go to Main Menu -> Setting -> Applications manager</li>
+ <li>Go to Tools -> Application catalogue...</li>
+ <li>Click New and enter:
+ <br />Catalogue name: Maemo Chinook
+ <br />Web address: http://repository.maemo.org
+ <br />Distribution: chinook
+ <br />Components: free non-free
+ <br />Be sure that this repository was not added before !
+ </li>
+ </ol>
+
+ <br />To activate „Red pill mode” follow this steps:
+ <ol style="margin-left: 25px; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: -5px;">
+ <li>Go to Main Menu -> Setting -> Applications manager</li>
+ <li>Go to Tools -> Application catalogue...</li>
+ <li>Click New and enter matrix into Web address (remember to remove http:// entry)</li>
+ <li>Click on Cancel. Question about pill should be displayed. Click on Red. To deactivate „Red pill mode” repeat above steps but in last step Click on Blue.</li>
+ </ol>
+ <br />Now click on Browse installable applications go to Tools->Search and enter libbz2 into Search word field and click OK. Click and install libbz2-1.0 package.
+ <br />After successful installation of libz2 package you should be able to install mdctionary without any problems by clicking on <a href="files/mdictionary2008.install">INSTALL</a>.<br />

+ mDictionary installation steps for OS2007 and OS2006
+ </h2>

+ In order to install our application click <a href="files/mdictionary.install">INSTALL</a> or make the following steps:<br />
+ <ol style="margin-left: 25px;">
+ <li>Download the binary package from our download section</li>
+ <li>Open the file manager and double click on downloaded file.</li>
+ <li>A window will pop up notifying you that the package hasn't been verified by Nokia. In order to install the dictionary you will have to ignore these warnings.</li>
+ </ol>

+ Scratchbox installation
+ </h1>
+ - Download the binary package from our download section
+ <br /> - Log into scratchbox and become root by issuing the command: <span class="code">fakeroot su</span>
+ <br /> - Install mDictionary package mentioned above by using: <span class="code">dpkg -i package_name</span>.<br />

+ Our application allows for using various parsing engines, so that different dictionary formats could be used. We have included a XDXF and StarDict format parsing engine to provide an example and to make it usable.

+ Installing new dictionaries
+ </h1>
+
+ <p>
+ Dictionaries in mDictionary are files containing the words database. For now we have only included a package containing a XDXF and StarDict format parser. You are welcome to contribute new parsing engines and we hope you will find our API documentation useful in development process. In order to add new dictionaries you'll have to download files containing the words database and make sure you have the appropriate parsing engine installed. As far as the XDXF and StarDict formats are concerned, they can be found under this address:

+ Place the dictionary file wherever you wish, however it has to be reachable by the application. In order to register new file in our dictionary, choose the Load Dictionary option from the application menu. To make <u>XDXF</u> dictionaries to work faster, you can optimize them (a special dialog will lead you through this procces). <u>StarDict dictionaries do not require optimalization</u> (there is no difference if you enable optimizing or not). If you would like to exclude a dictionary from searching, use the Select Dictionary option from the menu and check/uncheck a box next to your desired file.

+ In order to unregister dictionary from mDictionary, use the Remove Dictionary option. This will not erase the file however, you will have to do it manually if you want to remove it from your device.

+ Uninstalling the application

+ Uninstalling mDictionary can be performed using the Application Manager. Enter the Show Installed Applications item and uninstall mdictionary package.

+<strong>mDictionary</strong> (known as WhiteStork) is a multilingual dictionary enabling its users to use many dictionary formats. Its dedicated platforms are Nokia N770, N800, N810 and N900 internet tablets. Our final goal is to use many search engines so that different file formats could be used. They will be in a form of dynamically loadable modules. Currently there are engines available for the XDXF and StarDict dictionaries. There is also support for user bookmarks and tar.gz files.

+The aim of this project is to give users the possibility to translate most common words on their Nokia's tablets in an easy and intuitive way. The user just has to type a word, click find button and after a while translation is presented. The software allows the use of more than one dictionary at the same time. The user can import a new dictionary file or choose from the installed ones. Another useful feature is a clipboard. It gives a possibility to carry the translation of a word into another application.

+Since the application has been released as mDictionary (1.0), all modules have been placed in one package. Package's license has been changed to GPL.

+<strong>mDictionary</strong> can not only help, but also teach. Thanks to the special searching system user does not have to know the exact word's spelling, the words which start with the same letter are displayed. Moreover, wildcards can be use in a user's query.</p>
+<p>One of the main goals while designing mDictionary was to create a user friendly application. Clear and easy to conquer UI allows to believe that user feel comfortable with the application.</p>

+ WhiteStork Screenshots List
+
+Abstract
+ This document describe what screenshots are needed for each version of
+WhiteStork. Furthemore, there are presented tools that can be used to take
+screenshots on maemo platform in this document.

+2. Tools
+ There are few applications and tools that can be used for taking
+screenshots on maemo platform based system. Some are listed here.
+
+ 2.1 osso-screenshot-tool
+ It is the best method to make a screenshots, but only when You have got
+access to the devica through SSH. Executing command:
+osso-screenshot-tool file.png
+will result in taking immediately screenshots and putting it into file.png. So
+it is possible to give a file particular, specyfic name and place it in any
+directory You want. When there is no SSH access it will need XTerminal installed
+on the system and make it harder to specify a name. To download tool go to page:

+or google for phrase "osso-screenshot-tool".
+
+ 2.2 HM Shot Tool
+ On page http://inz.fi/blog/2007/06/21/screenshooting-made-easy-ish/ You
+will find out more about this tool. There is a big disadvantage of MH Shot Tool
+- it does not support (11/7/2007) delayed screenshot.
+
+ 2.3 Maemo Screengrabber
+ Go to http://tuomas.kulve.fi/blog/2007/01/17/maemo-screen-grabber/ or to
+http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2007/maemo-screengrabber/ for
+more information. It is wrapper for osso-screenshot-tool that allow you to
+take a screenshot by activating menu position in task navigator. It will wait
+for 5 seconds and take a screenshot, placing it in Image folder.
+
+ 2.4 load-applet-run
+ This tool can be downloaded from
+https://garage.maemo.org/projects/load-applet/. After instaling load-applet, You
+should place it in status bar. It allows for delayed screenshots, but there is
+no option to change defualt folder for images (Images).
+
+ 2.5 Using VNC
+ It is possible to install VNC Server on the device
+(http://mike.saunby.googlepages.com/x11vncfornokia7702). If server is running it
+is easy to connect to it from Your host computer and take a screenshots directly
+from Gnome/KDE/Ms Windows system.
+
+ 2.6 Scratchbox
+ If application is able to run on scratchbox, screenshots could be taken
+from it. This method is not recomended as far as sometimes applications looks
+different on scratchbox and on device. Furthemore scratchbox does not have all
+functionalities that is accessible on maemo platform, so not always there will
+be option to show all application's functions. At last, but not at least,
+screenshots taken on real device looks muche better than ones taken on
+scratchbox.
+
+3. Screenshots List
+ For each version of WhiteStork there could be different functionalities,
+so it is needed to distinguish them (versions) in screenshots list. Newer
+version has always all screenshots from the previous one (unless there is
+straightforward specified that some screenshots are not actual in new version)
+plus some new, presenting functions and GUI parts tha were not present in old
+version. Furthemore, from time to time it is helpfull to put complete list of
+screenshots for particular version, to prevent the user from browsing whole
+document and assemble full screenshots list from many versions - such a list
+is titled: "WhiteStork [COMPLETE LIST] (version x.y.z)"
+

+ 5.1 Creating thumbnails from image set
+ You will need to have a convert command in order to be able to use this
+method. It is available with package imagemagick (in Ubuntu distro:
+ sudo apt-get install imagemagick).
+ With convert You can execute below script in directory with all images
+You want to thumbnail:

+ <b>mDictionary</b> Multilingual Dictionary has been built with three modules, dependant of each other: mDictionary (internal application management), mDictionaryGui (graphical user interface) and mDictionaryPlugins (parsing engines). Since mDictionary 1.0 has been released, they are placed in one package - mDictionary.

+ In order to install our application make the following steps:

+ mDictionary gives user a possibility to explore a different kinds of dictionary files. You can use a couple of them at the same time or load them into the mDictionary application and keep them in case they are useful. So far there are two engines implemented, which allow for use of <b>XDXF</b> and <b>StarDict</b> dictionaries.

+ <p>If you want to load a new dictionary file to your mDictionary you have to download and unpack proper files first. If you don't have any files with dictionaries you can find some <a href="http://xdxf.revdanica.com/down/">here</a>. After you have unpacked files, please create a folder with a proper name on your device and put there dictionary files. <u>It is strongly recommended to put files into a folder with a name of the dictionary. Without that your mDictionary cannot work properly.</u><br> If you have finished the steps above, run mDictionary and choose <i>Load dicionary</i> from <i>Dictionaries</i> submenu in application menu.</p>
+ <p>Developers laid on compatibility mDictionary with various file types. mDictionary can load a dictionary from .xdxf files, .idx, .dict.dz or .ifo (StarDict files) or even .tar.bz2.</p>

+ There is possibility to use more than one dictionary at the same time. To do this, you just have to choose <i>Select dictionaries</i> from <i>Dictionaries</i> submenu and tick the dictionaries, which you would like to search in.

+ Anytime, you can select Bookmarks as an active dictionary as well. Than you will be able to search, not only in XDXF or StarDict dictionaries, but also in your own, Bookmark database.

+ If you decide that you don't need one of the dictionaries anymore, you can delete it from the application. It is a very easy process, but it does not mean, that a dictionary file will be erased from your device.

+ To remove a loaded dictionary from your mDictionary, please open <i>Dictionaries</i> submenu from an Application Menu and choose <i>Remove Dictionaries</i>. The special dialog window will pop up and lead you through the removing process step by step.

+ If you load a new XDXF dictionary file, it is a good idea to optimize it. It means, that a special cache file will be created in order to make searching much faster. After loading a dictionary file you will be asked whether to optimize a new dictionary or not. If you decide not to optimize it, there is always a possibility to do this later. By choosing <i>Optimize dictionaries</i> from <i>Dictionaries</i> submenu you can check which dictionaries have not been optimized or simply optmize them.<br />
+ There is no possibility to optimize StarDict dictionaries due to a special mechanism, which is build in StarDict dictionaries (enabling this option for StarDict dictionaries does not change anything).

+ <p>Bookmarks have been provided to make user feel more comfortable with the application. This module works very similar to the bookmarks which can be seen in any Web Browser application. Bookmarks are treated in the same way as other dictionaries. You can browse them anytime, search in, add or remove words.</p>
+ <p>When you choose <i>Open bookmarks</i> from <i>Bookmarks</i> submenu, application will switch into a bookmarks mode. Than you can browse bookmarks. If you perform a search, you will only see the words which have been found. If you want to reload list of all words from bookmarks, simply type * (asterisk) into the find toolbar textbox and start a search. You can use wildcards as well.</p>

+ <p>mDictionary provides a search history. It means than anytime you select a word on a words list and call for translation of the word, it is added to the history. Than, you can browse it. History stores your previous search results. It is a very useful feature, similar to the browser.</p>
+ <p>To go to the previously found word you have to choose <i>Find previous</i> option from <i>Search</i> submenu. It is dimmed if there are no words in the history. If you are browsing history, and you decide to go forward - choose <i>Find next</i> from <i>Search</i> submenu. It is dimmed if there are no words available as well.</p>
+
+ <p>You can also choose buttons from a find toolbar, instead of using application menu. Green arrows placed between <i>search</i> and <i>stop</i> button are appropriately <i>back</i> and <i>forward</i> in the history. </p>
+

+ Search a word
+ </li>
+ <p>To start searching process you have to call search function. There are two possibilities to do this. After you type a pattern into a find toolbar entry, click a <i>Search button</i> places on a toolbar (next to the entry). You can also go to the application menu and choose <i>Find</i> from <i>Search</i> submenu. Finally, you can use harware key ("Go").</p>

+<p>If <b>YOU HAVE INSTALLED APPLICATION, BUT BOOKMARKS MENU IS DIMMED</b> or <b>AN ERROR MESSAGE HAS BEEN DISPLAYED WHEN STARTING WHITESTORK</b>, probably Bookmarks module has not been installed with WhiteStork. The reason could be lack of dependencies (libsqlite0 or libsqlite3). If you still want to use Bookmarks, please folow the steps:<br>
+<p>1. Turn your device into <a href="http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationManagerRedPillMode">RED PILL MODE</a>. It allows you to install missing libraries.</p>
+<p>2. Wait a couple of seconds, while list of packages is refreshing.</p>
+<p>3. Choose <i>Install new application</i></p>
+<p>4. Click <i>libs</i></p>
+<p>5. Find <b>libsqlite0 (N770)</b> or <b>libsqlite3 (N800)</b> on a list and install a package</p>
+<p>6. Switch an application back from RED PILL MODE.</p>
+<p>7. Restart your WhiteStork.</p>

+WhiteStork gives user a wide range of possibilities to use clipboard. You can not only copy translation to the clipboard and use it in another application but also paste a text from the clipboard into a find toolbar textbox so that searching is easier than ever!</p>

+<p>If you want to copy selected text from translation area simply choose <i>Copy</i> from <i>Edit submenu</i> in application menu or in context sensitive menu.</p>

+<p>It is very easy to select text in the translation area. Please, double tap on a word which you want to select (one word will be selected) or use double tap and drag to select any text.<br>
+You can also use <i>Select All</i> option from <i>Edit</i> submenu in application on context senstitive menu. This option allows for selecting the whole translation.</p>

+<li>Translation only!</li>
+<p>There is possibility to hide words list anytime user wants. To do this, click green arrow in a left corner or choose <i>Hide words</i> list from <i>View</i> submenu in application menu.</p>

+<li>Magnifying ... </li>
+<p>Sometimes font in translation area is too small to read it. In that case you can use <i>Zoom in</i> option. You can call it from <i>View</i> submenu in application menu, from context sensitive menu or just simply use hardware keys. If you don't want to magnify text anymore, choose <i>Zoom out</i></p>
+<li>Fullscreen</li>
+<p>WhiteStork can work in two modes: normal and fullscreen. By default, WhiteStork runs in normal mode. Anytime you can switch it into fullscreen mode by choosing <i>Fullscreen</i> option from <i>View</i> submenu or by using hardware keys.</p>

+<li>History</li>
+<p>WhiteStork provides a search history. It means than anytime you select a word on a words list and call for translation of the word, it is added to the history. Than, you can browse it. History stores your previous search results. It is a very useful feature, similar to the browser.<br>
+To go to the previously found word you have to choose <i>Find previous</i> option from <i>Search</i> submenu. It is dimmed if there are no words in the history. If you are browsing history, and you decide to go forward - choose <i>Find next</i> from <i>Search</i> submenu. It is dimmed if there are no words available as well.<br>
+You can also choose buttons from a find toolbar, instead of using application menu. Green arrows placed between <i>search</i> and <i>stop</i> button are appropriately <i>back</i> and <i>forward</i> in the history. </p>
+<li>Search a word</li>
+<p>To start searching process you have to call search function. There are two possibilities to do this. After you type a pattern into a find toolbar entry, click a <i>Search button</i> places on a toolbar (next to the entry). You can also go to the application menu and choose <i>Find</i> from <i>Search</i> submenu. Finally, you can use harware key ("Go").</p>

+<p>If a search process takes too long or you made mistake in a pattern, you can stop searching process. Click <i>Stop button</i> on a toolbar or <i>Stop</i> option from <i>Search</i> submenu.</p>
